Uplift Workers On Strike
THE PROBLEM
When union members are forced to go on strike to win a fair contract, they make the difficult decision to go without pay for weeks or months at a time in order to win better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
WHY IT MATTERS
When corporations use fraudulent tactics to strategically prolong contract negotiations, union members and their families directly suffer. During a strike, not only are wages affected, but union members’ benefits are also frozen. This puts undue strain on both the workers forced to go on strike and the families who rely on those workers. While governors in Massachusetts have often allowed striking workers to collect unemployment benefits on a case-by-case basis, it is not a standardized practice and sometimes depends on the political party of the governor.
THE SOLUTION
S.1319 and H.2168 will help level the playing field for workers and hold irresponsible employers accountable.
This legislation allows employees forced to strike to be eligible for unemployment benefits after 30 days of being on the picket line, standardizing the benefits eligibility of workers engaged in labor disputes.
Passing UI for striking workers will result in working people keeping money in their pockets during a prolonged strike and will hold companies accountable for using financial stress and strain as a weapon against their workers during a strike, ultimately averting more strikes without major costs increases to our UI fund.
